DAVIS, Calif. – Junior Sarah Ramos-Lasso defeated Ciara Wallace, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 3 singles for the equalizing match, then the duo of Isabella Bollinger and Peyton Smith scored five unanswered points to finish a tiebreaker for the clincher at No. 3 doubles, as fifth-seeded St. Francis posted a mild upset of 5-4 against fourth-seeded Davis in a Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I girls' tennis quarterfinal match at Davis Community Park Tuesday afternoon.
The Troubadours improve to 10-7 for the year and advances to Monday semifinal against top-seeded and undefeated Oak Ridge, which claimed an 8-1 win over No. 8 Gregori in the opposite side of the bracket.
St. Francis took down the top two singles matches in straight sets, as has been the norm for most matches in 2025. Junior Maria McDougall dispatched Gianna Ji, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles; while sophomore Sandra Wallace swept Kyla Schumann, 6-2, 6-1, in the adjacent court.
However those two singles matches, plus Davis' victory at No. 1 doubles, were the only outcomes decided quickly. Davis picked up split-set wins at both No. 4 and No. 6 singles, with Troubies Sophia Troppmann and Gabrielle Mahlmann each winning 6-3 first sets before their respective Davis opponents battled back. Sophomore Lena Mundhenk came back from a 6-4 loss in the first set to take a 5-4 lead in the second, but was visible hobbled in the process. Refusing to retire and concede a match, Mundhenk gutted out the No. 5 singles tilt but came away with a straight-set, 6-4, 7-5 loss to Sydney Sargent.
St. Francis' No. 2 doubles tandem of Ava Ensberg and Stella Lucchetti traded 6-4 sets with Grace Lee and Eva Wilson before snaring a 10-8 tiebreaker set for the team's third win. The Troubies now trailed, 4-3, in the match but had Ramos still going with Isabella Bollinger and Peyton Smith up a set at No. 3 doubles. Ramos finally finished her marathon battle with a 7-5, 7-5 victory. This tied the team score at 4-4, and put all of the attention on the No. 3 doubles court.
Already with a 6-2 first-set win in the bag, Bollinger and Smith dropped a close 6-4 second set to Davis' Lucy Jergensen and Karley Liu, forcing yet another one-game tiebreaker. Jergensen propelled the Blue Devils to a 3-1 start with an ace and a lob that handcuffed Smith. However, Smith's first serve coaxed an errant serve return, then her big forehand tied the set at 3-3. This began an overall 9-1 SF finish to the tiebreaker.
Appropriate for a former Troubie volleyball player, Bollinger put down two overhead smashes in the final stretch, with Smith doing likewise for the seventh point. Finally, a Davis shot fell short of the net, finishing the win for the Bollinger/Smith duo and clinching the semifinal berth for St. Francis.
The Troubies take on Oak RIdge at Broadstone Sports Club on Monday, but not before McDougall and Wallace compete in the section individual championship at Johnson Ranch on Friday and Saturday. The two SF standouts snared the top two places at the Sierra Foothill League individual championship on October 27, thus moving on to the section tourney. McDougall is the reigning SJS runner-up, only falling to Folsom's Jayani Sri Nandika Duggirala in a 7-5, 6-4 battle at last year's event.
The SJS individual championships start at 10:30 on Friday, while Monday's semifinal start time remains TBA (but tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m.).
