ELK GROVE, Calif. – St. Francis tennis opened its 2025 season with a 7-2 win over Christian Brothers during a non-league dual match at Laguna Creek Sports Club Wednesday, with junior Maria McDougal and sophomore Sandra Wallace posting straight set victories in the top two singles matches, respectively.
McDougall won No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 score, while Wallace had the mirror image of a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 2. Sarah Ramos-Lasso and Sophia Troppmann went to third-set, single-game tiebreakers for their wins at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. Ramos-Lasso won her opener easily but had to come back from a second-set loss to win 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (6). In contrast, Troppman bounced back from a tough first set to grind out her victory, 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4).
St. Francis swept all three doubles matches, with the No. 1 tandem of Ava Ensberg and Stella Lucchetti doing so in a 6-3, 6-3 sweep. Nura Fananapazir teamed with Ananya Saini to battle back from an early loss, taking down their No. 2 doubles with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5). Kat Gensler and Emi Martin scored a win at No. 3 with a similar shape: 1-6, 6-3, then a 10-8 win in the one-game tiebreaker.
Ava Dezham and Lena Mundhenk suffered the two lone SF losses, although hardly without a fight. Dezham dropped her No. 5 singles match by scores of 6-4, 6-3. Mundhenk went to a tiebreaker, ultimately falling by scores of 3-6, 6-2, 0-1 (6).
Wednesday's match follows the tradition of the more storied SF-CB rivalry competitions, the previous of which was volleyball's Holy Court showdown during the previous weekend. The next in line is flag football's "Holy Flags," the third installment of which takes place at Jesuit on September 12.
The Troubadour tennis squad hosts Rocklin for both its home and Sierra Foothill League opener on Thursday. Match time is 3:30 p.m. at Rollingwood YMCA.
