FAIR OAKS, Calif. – Sophomore Sandra Wallace claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory in her first appearance at No. 1 singles, while fellow sophomores Lena Mundhenk and Nura Fananapazir each scored split-set wins at No. 4 and 5, respectively, as St. Francis defeated Lincoln, 7-2, in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I girls' tennis tournament Monday at Rollingwood YMCA.
The fifth-seeded Troubadours improve to 9-7 for the year.
Overall, SF won four of its six singles lines and swept each of the three doubles matches to complete the team victory. Fananapazir had arguably the most unlikely victory, overcoming a 6-3 first set and a 5-1 deficit in the second against the Trojans' Jordan Asuncion. Fananapazir took down six straight games to force the one-game tiebreaker, which she won by a 10-4 score. This also earned her the team's "Dog Chain" award for hustle.
Mundhenk dominated the first set, 6-1, but then dropped the second by a 6-3 final before taking down the tiebreaker, 10-6, against Lincoln sophomore Brooke Somerville.
Wallace had the most lopsided win of the match with the 1-and-1 sweep of senior Reese Asuncion. Sophia Troppmann also prevailed in straight sets at No. 3, as did the doubles tandems of Ava Dezham and Emi Martin at No. 1, Ava Ensberg and Stella Lucchetti at line 2, and Peyton Smith and Isabella Bollinger on the No. 3 court. Wallace has performed at No. 2 singles throughout the season, but played No. 1 in the absence of fellow SJS individual qualifier Maria McDougall.
The lineup change also indirectly forced a change in the doubles pairings in compliance with the section rules with the team ladder. The Dezham/Martin moved up to No. 1 doubles, which bumped the Ensberg/Lucchetti tandem – the most frequent No. 1 team – to No. 2 doubles.
St. Francis advances to the Division I quarterfinal, held at No. 4 seed Davis on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
