LOOMIS, Calif. – The doubles tandem of Nura Fananapazir and Emi Martin beat Whitney's Avleen Gahunia and Sierra Orosco in the consolation final of the championship bracket, leading St. Francis at the Sierra Foothill League individual doubles championships at Del Oro Thursday.
The competition, which advances the top three Championship bracket finishers to the Sac-Joaquin Section individual tournament, took place all day at DO on Thursday but results were not announced until Friday morning. Representing the SFL at the section championships will be Del Oro's Ashley Rowland and Avery Phillips, Davis' Lea Lamoureux and Ana Palmbaum, and Golden Eagles Aubrie Holthaus and Elena Burke. Those duos finished first through third, respectively.
The Troubadours' No. 1 doubles tandem of Ava Ensberg and Stella Lucchetti fell to Davis' Gianna Ji and Helen Xia in the first round by scores of 6-4, 6-2; then lost to the Wildcats' Gahunia-Orosco team in the consolation half of the bracket, 6-4, 6-1. Meanwhile, the Fananapazir-Martin duo recovered from its loss to Lamoureux/Palmbalm by beating Rocklin's Amrita Chopra-Nihal Chopra team by trading 6-3 sets before claiming the one-game tiebreaker, 10-5. Fananapazir and Martin then took down Gahunia and Orosco, 6-4, 6-2.
St. Francis also had its No. 3 doubles pairing of Gabrielle Mahlmann and Peyton Smith in the Group 2 bracket. Mahlmann and Smith lost in the first round, but then advanced past Rocklin's Akshaya Swaminathan and Elina Sahoo in the consolation semi, then dispatched another Thunder team, Riya Kishore and Fucheng Zhou, in the consolation semi.
The SFL doubles championship complements the singles tournament, which ran three days earlier on Monday. St. Francis' Maria McDougall and Sandra Wallace emerged as the top two finishers. The SJS individual championships take place at Roseville's Johnson Ranch Sports Club this upcoming Thursday and Friday. Pairings will be available at cifsjs.org.
