McDougall, Wallace advance from SFL to section championship

LOOMIS, Calif. – St. Francis junior Maria McDougall and sophomore Sandra Wallace ended up as the two finalists and thus among the three qualifiers from the Sierra Foothill League singles tournament to the Sac-Joaquin Section individual championships. The SFL draws took place at Del Oro High School all day on Monday.

McDougall, Wallace and Folsom's Jayden Hill will represent the league at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club on November 6 and 7. Hill lost to McDougall in a straight-set semifinal, 6-1, 6-1, but dispatched Whitney's Lexa Nguyen for the third-place slot. Wallace had swept Nguyen in the opposite semifinal to her Troubadour teammate by scores of 7-5, 6-3.

McDougall advanced to the semifinals via walkover before sweeping Hill. In contrast, Wallace had one of the longest matches of the day, beating Oak Ridge's Alexa Osen, 6-3, in the first round before dropping a 7-3 tiebreaker to settle the second set. Wallace then breezed through the one-game third set by a 10-3 score to advance to the round of four. She then defeated Whitney's Nguyen to clinch a section tourney berth.

The SFL singles championship consisted of the main championship bracket, from which the SJS qualifiers advanced, plus eight-player, Group 2 and Group 3 draws. Sophia Troppmann, Lena Mundhenk and Sarah Ramos-Lasso represented the Troubies in Group 2, with Mundhenk and Ramos-Lasso facing each other in the semifinal. However, Ramos-Lasso ultimately lost to  Oak Ridge's Krisha Nayak in the Group 2 final. Gabrielle Mahlmann was the lone Troubadour in Group 3.

Finally, Groups 4 through 6 had a standard first-round match, then the three fields were pooled into six second-round pairings with no further advancement. Sophomore Nura Fananapazir and freshman Peyton Smith represented SF in that group, which also played best-to-four sets.

A full summary of the Championship bracket plus all St. Francis participation in Groups 2-6 is available below.

A similar league doubles championship will take place on Thursday, also at Del Oro. (Note: this event previously appeared on early schedules as an October 31 event, but moved up one day to October 30.)
