SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Maria McDougall and freshman Alyssa Gutierrez earned Sierra Foothill League MVP honors for girls' tennis and cross country, respectively, as the league rolled out its fall slate of standings and awards.
All-league status is determined throughout the fall postseason and by a variety of methods, but not officially announced until the conclusion of all fall sports. Among St. Francis' six fall sports, flag football, volleyball and water polo are determined by a vote of coaches, golf by the results of the two league tournaments, and tennis from the individual tourneys.
McDougall and sophomore teammate Sandra Wallace reached the league singles championship match, each earning berths to the Sac-Joaquin Section individual tourney. She posted a 16-1 record in dual play, while adding five additional victories in the two postseason events.
Gutierrez went on to finish as the section runner-up for the second straight year. Gutierrez won both SFL and SJS Division III individual titles, then finished second in the state at last weekend's CIF championship meet in Fresno. St. Francis captured its 16th all-time section banner before going on to claim a program-best second at the state championships.
In all, eight Troubadours won first-team All-SFL status. Besides the two MVPs, Tayli Paeu-Lindgren and Monet Zauner earned such honors in flag football, Wallace joined McDougall in tennis, with Arden Han-Wei (golf), Hailey Sutton (volleyball) and Maya Wenceslao (water polo) as the lone SF representatives on their respective All-SFL top squads.
What follows below is a summary of St. Francis' All-SFL winners plus team awards. Tennis will announce its team honors at its banquet on December 10, while volleyball will do likewise during the Troubies' team dinner in January.
