Pierre-Garcia upsets Del Oro to advance to SJS semis

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – The St. Francis doubles tandem of Aniyus Pierre and Chloe Garcia upset No. 3-seeded Avery Phillips and Neeka Abadi of Del Oro in the quarterfinals to cap their day at the Sac-Joaquin Section Doubles Championship at Johnson Ranch Sports Club Thursday.

The all-senior Troubadour pair now faces No. 2 seed Irene Huang and Subha Patel of Laguna Creek in Friday's semifinal round. Match time is 10 a.m., also at Johnson Ranch.

Pierre and Garcia dispatched the Edison team of Angelina Torregoza and Marisol Zaragoza, 6-1, 6-1, in their first-round match. They then outdueled the Eagles pair by falling 6-4 in the first set, winning by a matching 6-4 in the second, then pulling off a 10-7 victory in the one-game tiebreaker.

Pierre-Garcia won the Delta League doubles title, upsetting two seeded squads to take the crown. In turn, Huang and Patel captured the Metro League Super Doubles championship on October 28.

Huang is a senior who has committed to play collegiately at MIT. Patel won the CIF-SJS Division IV title for Mountain House as a freshman in 2021.

The last St. Francis doubles team to reach the section championship match was Alisha Arwar and Izzy Asker in 2019, while the last to win was the sister tandem of Kiya and Kyla Jackson two years earlier.
