SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A 6-3 victory at McClatchy and a 7-2 win at Folsom, originally scheduled as preseason scrimmages, boost St. Francis to a 2-0 record to start its 2022 tennis season. Seniors Chloe Garcia and Lucy Phillips each won both of their singles draws, while four Troubadours – Arden Garcia, Anna Dinh, Caroline Niethammer and Madeline Welch – notched a pair of doubles victories.
By CIF rule, results of a scrimmage may not be publicized. However, the Bulldogs and Lions had faced each other in a countable match during the previous week, and Folsom battled to a 5-4 win over Lodi on August 25, making the two road dates retroactively count toward St. Francis' record as dual wins. All other rules and formats of a regular-season dual match were in effect.
Garcia beat McClatchy's Galle Anderson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles; then followed with a 6-1, 6-0 gem against Folsom's Angelina Khuc at No. 4 singles four days later on Aug. 30. Phillips had two closer battles in her triumphs: coming back from a 7-6 first-set loss to CKM's Monica McCallin; then outlasting Folsom's Lily Guo by 7-5, 7-5 scores in the Tuesday visit.
Freshman Sophia Troppmann, who teamed with Juliette Irwin for a split-set No. 1 doubles win at McClatchy, picked up her first singles victory as a Troubie on her 14th birthday: she rolled past Folsom's Aarushi Srivasta at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
The August 26 McClatchy date also featured exhibitions for five other Troubie athletes: Claire Allaye-Chan, Kate Jones, Ava Ensberg, Becca Weil and Laila Shamshad each saw action in no-ad pro sets.
St. Francis had a third scrimmage scheduled at Rocklin on Thursday but the date was canceled due to excessive heat in the Sacramento metro area. Instead, the Troubies are slated to begin their Delta League season at Elk Grove on Tuesday. Match time is 3:45 p.m.
