Irwin, Garcia win draws; Zhou clinches all-league nod

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Senior Chloe Garcia and junior Juliette Irwin each won their respective draws, while senior Norah Zhou advanced to the main bracket semifinals to clinch an all-league nod, highlighting St. Francis at the Delta League Girls' Tennis Singles Championships at Laguna Creek Sports Club Monday.

The top four finishers in the main draw, which consists of each school's top two singles players, earn All-Delta League recognition. Additionally, the top three finishers snare one of the league's individual berths to the Sac-Joaquin Section Individual Championship at Johnson Ranch on November 3-4. Zhou will take on Pleasant Grove's Jeannie Zhang in the all-important consolation final on Wednesday. Franklin's Aileena Hu and PG's Emi Mikami will compete for the league title on Wednesday as a lead-in to that day's doubles championships.

Zhou, the Troubadours' No. 1 singles entrant, beat Cosumnes Oaks' Emma Kuang, 6-1, 6-3, in her opening match; then dispatched PG's Mischa Mikami by a 6-2, 6-3 score in the quarterfinal. The younger Mikami sister then defeated Zhou in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Garcia charged her way through the Singles 4 bracket, including a double-bagel victory over Franklin's Vivian Ching in the title matchup. The team co-captain beat CO's Pali Luo, 6-2, 6-1, then PG's Jade Yen-Calhoun, 6-3, 6-4 before the 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Ching in the final. Irwin prevailed in each of her three matches in the Singles 6 draw to win that medal, defeating CO's Alexis Ching (scores unavailable), then sweeping EG's Erika Yepes, 6-4, 6-0; before defeating PG's Jenna Brozaitis, 6-4, 6-1.

Senior Hayley Labia represented St. Francis at No. 2 singles. She had a wild ride against Davis' Maria Anderson: a 6-0 loss in the first set, then a 6-1 victory in the second to force the one-game tiebreaker. Unfortunately, Anderson pulled away to a 10-5 win to advance. Tatum Walbeck and Lucy Phillips earned the Troubie spots in the No. 3 and No. 5 brackets, respectively. Walbeck lost in the first round to top-seeded May Edmunds of Cosumnes Oaks, 6-3, 6-1. Phillips had a first-round bye as the top seed at Singles 5, but lost a 7-6, 7-6 heartbreaker to Davis' Bianca Ho.

All seven schools return to Laguna Creek for the doubles championships on Wednesday, with the first- and third-place singles matches contesting first. As in singles, the top four finishers in the doubles main draw will earn All-Delta League honors, while the top three pairs will qualify for the CIF-SJS individual championships on November 3-4.

St. Francis already earned on the league's three spots in the section team playoffs, which starts Monday, October 31.
