ELK GROVE, Calif. – The rookie doubles tandem of junior Kate Jones and freshman Ava Ensberg scored a straight-set, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, while three Troubadours picked up singles victories, but St. Francis fell in a 5-4 heartbreaker to Franklin in girls' tennis dual action Tuesday afternoon.
The Troubies suffer their first loss, moving to 3-1 for the year and 1-1 in Delta League play.
Lucy Phillips, Juliette Irwin and Sophia Troppmann claimed wins at No. 3 through No. 5 singles. Phillips went the distance against Thu Nguyen, breezing to a 6-1 win in the opener, falling in a tiebreaker for the second, before claiming a 6-4 triumph in the third. Irwin and Troppmann each won in straight sets, both prevailing by 6-2 first-set scores before battling to two-game wins in the second.
However, the Wildcats came up on the winning side of the third set at No. 2 doubles, No. 2 singles and No. 6 singles to eke out the team victory.
Tuesday's match is the second of three Delta League duals this week for St. Francis. The Troubies traveled to Cosumnes Oaks for a rescheduled date on Monday, then will return to action at Pleasant Grove on Thursday.
