ELK GROVE, Calif. – St. Francis prevailed in all six singles matches and the two contested doubles matches in straight sets, defeating Elk Grove by a 9-0 team score in a Delta League girls' tennis dual match Friday afternoon.
The Troubadours improve to 5-2 for the season, with a 3-2 record in league matches. Friday's meeting was a twice-postponed event: it was originally scheduled for September 6 but postponed to the most recent Monday due to the area heat wave in early September. However, expected rain on that Monday pushed it back another four days to Friday – oddly, just six days prior to SF's return visit to the Thundering Herd home courts.
Of the eight matches played, St. Francis won two by double-bagel scores. Juliette Irwin dispatched Ayla Abreu by a 6-0, 6-0 final at No. 6 singles, while the No. 2 doubles tandem of Arden Garcia and Madeline Welch won by the same totals. Chloe Garcia and Lucy Phillips respectively claimed their No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches by surrendering just one game, while Norah Zhou (No. 2 singles), Hayley Labia (No. 3 singles) and Anna Dinh/Sophia Troppmann (No. 1 doubles) won 1 and 1 at their respective courts.
Senior Aniyus Pierre had the longest match of the afternoon, although still won in straight sets. She beat Brooke Hanson, 6-3, in the first set, then came out on top in a 7-5 battle in the second.
Sophomore Kavya Benush made her season debut, albeit in a single-set exhibition. She blanked Yuliana Duran, 6-0, as the two doubles matches went underway.
St. Francis returns to action on Tuesday for a road dual at Davis. Match time is 3:45 p.m.
