Troubies top Jaguars in first round of section playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The all-sophomore tandem of Anna Dinh and Arden Garcia outlasted opponents Reine Woodard and Kiana Atwell in the tiebreaker to complete a St. Francis sweep of the three doubles matches, part of a 6-3 overall victory over Gregori a first-round matchup of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I girls' tennis championship tournament at Rio Del Oro Sports Club Monday.

The sixth-seeded Troubadours will now head to No. 3 seed Rocklin on Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a quarterfinal matchup.

The Dinh-Garcia crew played the No. 1 doubles matchup, contesting the closest of the three straight-set wins with its 6-2, 7-6 final score and 7-5 in the second-set tiebreaker. Juliette Irwin and Caroline Niethammer won the No. 2 match, 6-3, 6-1; while Arini Tandon and Sophia Troppmann prevailed even more decisively at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3.

St. Francis picked up three dominating wins on the singles courts to complete the team victory, all from senior members of the squad. Norah Zhou beat Kate Parks in a double-bagel matchup at No. 2, Hayley Labia posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Eden Kanon at line 3, while Chloe Garcia made equally quick work of Georgia Thoukis, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.

Rocklin, which boasts a total of 44 players between its varsity and JV rosters, have won two of the last three CIF-SJS Division I championships in 2021 and 2018. The Thunder holds a 15-4 overall record after their 9-0 shutout of Kennedy in Monday's first-round tilt.

St. Francis, which improved to 10-9 with the win over the Jaguars, seek their 11th all-time SJS banner. The Troubies captured seven straight from 2005 through 2011, plus one in 2017. They last reached the section title match in 2018, ultimately losing to Rocklin, 7-2.

This week's slate also features the SJS Individual Championships at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club on Thursday and Friday, to which Chloe Garcia and Aniyus Pierre earned a spot by virtue of their Delta League doubles title last Wednesday. Brackets for the individual tourney will be announced on the SJS website (cifsjs.org) later in the week.
