PALO ALTO, Calif. – Senior Norah Zhou and sophomore Tatum Walbeck each picked up singles victories, while Aniyus Pierre and Hayley Labia made their season doubles debut, highlighting St. Francis on the first day of Menlo's Golden State Classic tournament Friday.

The Troubadours lost to Los Altos, 5-1, at the Menlo site; then fell to Burlingame by a 4-2 final at the Gunn High site in Palo Alto.

Zhou scored a straight-set win over Los Altos' Maddie Chin at No. 2 singles in the midday matchup, then Walbeck prevailed against Burlingame's Caitlin Stone in the Troubies' evening finale. Walbeck took the first set with an 8-6 tiebreaker, then pulled away to a 6-1 win to complete the sweep.

Pierre and Labia, normally mainstays at the top of St. Francis' singles ladder, took advantage of the opportunity to play doubles. They defeated Burlingame's pairing of Kaleia Daga and Izzy Kossar, 6-3, 7-5.

All three singles matches in the Friday nightcap featured a tiebreaker set, with the No. 2 battle between Troubie Chloe Garcia and Panther Michelle Moshkovoy featuring one in each frame. Moshkovoy took the first tiebreaker, 7-3; then Garcia claimed the second by a 7-2 final. Moshkovoy then nabbed the single-game tiebreaker in the third, 10-3.

The tournament features modified dual matches, with only three singles matches rather than six. The Golden State Tennis Classic concludes Saturday. St. Francis opens its Day 2 against host Gunn.
