Dinh-Garcia comeback highlights SF in loss at Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Seniors Norah Zhou and Hayley Labia picked up split-set wins at singles while the doubles tandem of Anna Dinh and Arden Garcia went the distance toward a three-set victory at No. 2 doubles, but St. Francis dropped a 6-3 dual match at Davis in Delta League girls' tennis action Tuesday afternoon.

The Troubies fall to 5-3 overall and even their conference record to 3-3.

The Dinh-Garcia win at No. 2 doubles may have been the most dramatic of the match. After splitting the first two sets in identical 6-4, 4-6 scores, the two trailed their Blue Devil opponents by an 8-2 margin in the 10-point tiebreaker. Dinh and Garcia battled back with eight straight points to claim the 10-8 set win and the 2-1 match win.

Zhou also traded 6-4 set scores with her Davis counterpart, Maya Moeller, before scoring a 10-7 victory in the tiebreaker at No. 2 singles. Meanwhile, Labia – already the team's "Queen of the Court" honoree for the week due to her last-to-leave mentality in practice – lived up to that billing as the last player off the court on the No. 3 singles court. She cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set, fell 7-5 in the second, then snared a 10-5 victory in the tiebreaker.

Unfortunately for St. Francis, Davis won the other four singles matches in straight sets. The Blue Devils also claimed the No. 1 doubles victory with scores of 1 and 2, and gutted out a tough battle over Troubies Caroline Niethammer and Arini Tandon in a 7-5 tiebreaker in the third.

St. Francis continues its long road stretch with a dual meet at Elk Grove on Thursday, just six days after sweeping the Thundering Herd in a previous visit. Match time is 3:45 p.m.
