Troubies honor seniors in home finale

Troubies honor seniors in home finale

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Hayley Labia scored her team's lone win at No. 3 singles, as St. Francis lost by an 8-1 final to Davis in the Delta League girls' tennis season finale at Rio Del Oro Sports Club Thursday. The match served as both the home opener and home finale for the Troubadours, who had played the entire season to date on the road – mostly in the Elk Grove area.

St. Francis honored a total of seven seniors as part of the season finale in a postmatch ceremony: Labia, Chloe Garcia, Lucy Phillips, Aniyus Pierre, Norah Zhou, Madeline Welch and Becca Weil.

Labia defeated Blue Devil senior Maria Anderson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The remaining five singles matches and three doubles matches went in straight sets to Davis, although Garcia took May Edmunds to a 6-4 tiebreaker in the first set. Pierre and Zhou also battled at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, taking Hannah Proctor and Maya Moeller to 7-5 matchups in the opener.

The Delta League holds its individual singles championship on Monday, then its doubles championship on Wednesday. Both events take place at Laguna Creek Sports Club. Brackets will be announced on site that morning.

Both Davis and SF had clinched Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berths entering Thursday's match, although the Blue Devils needed the win to clinch the league title outright. The CIF-SJS tournament begins on Monday, October 31.
