ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Sophomore Maria McDougall took down McClatchy's defending champion Lyla Van Loben Sels in the semifinal, then battled Folsom's Jayani Sri Nandika Duggirala to a 7-5, 6-4 loss in the title match, representing St. Francis at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I girls' individual tennis championship at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club Friday.
McDougall prevailed against Van Loben Sels in a wild match, claiming the first set by a 6-3 final, then getting blanked in the second. However, the Troubadour No. 1 singles player took the one-game tiebreaker, 11-9. That marked the first meeting between the two since the 2023 preseason, when Van Loben Sels beat McDougall in straight sets in a non-league dual match.
While McDougall eventually lost to Duggirala in the championship match, that still showed a progression from their previous meeting: the SJS final was a reunion of the Sierra Foothill League singles title match, which Duggirala won by a 6-4, 6-1 final.
The SJS individual tournaments took place amidst the team competition, of which St. Francis remains in the hunt. The Troubadours return to action against top-seeded Granite Bay in the semifinals. The match has been postponed to Tuesday due to expected weather on Monday. Match time will be 2 p.m. at Gold River Sports Club.
