Troubies prevail over CKM in tennis season opener

FAIR OAKS, Calif. – Five Troubadour veterans won their respective singles matches in straight sets while all three doubles matches went to a 10-point tiebreaker set, as St. Francis tennis claimed a 7-2 victory over McClatchy in the 2024 season opener at Rollingwood YMCA Friday afternoon.

The Troubadours open their first season under new head coach Matt Brunner.

Sophomores Maria McDougall and Sarah Ramos-Lasso nearly recorded double bagels for their wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively. McDougall dispatched Lila Swanson, 6-0, 6-1, with Ramos-Lasso making quick work of Mia Kaufman by identical scores. Senior Tatum Walbeck picked up the victory at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep of Jane McCormack, senior Arden Garcia notched a 6-1, 6-2 win over Madeleine Doughty at No. 6, with yet another senior Anna Dinh taking down Maya Williamson by scores of 6-4, 6-4.

On the doubles courts, junior Laila Shamshad and freshman Nura Fananapazir fought back from a 6-2 loss in the first set by breezing through the second set by a 6-1 final before taking the tiebreaker by a 10-4 margin. Senior Litzy Alengaden and junior Ava Ensberg held on for a 6-4 in the opener, fell 6-2 in the second, then edged the tandem of Camille Holtkamp and Kaydence Yee, 10-8, in the tiebreaker.

Fananapazir and sophomores Ana Stamatis and Ava Dezham made their SF debuts in Friday's matchup. The Stamatis/Dezham team recovered from a 6-2 first-set loss to Lions Ali MacGillivray and Monroe Kuney with a 6-4 win in the second. The CKM pair nabbed the 10-5 tiebreaker.

Friday's match was initially scheduled to be played at McClatchy, but facilities forced the contest to be moved to the Troubies' new home venue.

St. Francis returns to action with a match against former Delta League mate Cosumnes Oaks on Thursday. Match time has yet to be determined. Check back at GoTroubies.com for updated information.
