DAVIS, Calif. – The tandem of senior Arden Garcia and Lena Mundhenk completed a 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Grace Lee and Afreen Islam, claiming the win at No. 3 doubles and clinching St. Francis' 5-4 win over Davis in a Sierra Foothill League girls' tennis dual match at Davis Community Park Thursday afternoon.
The Troubadours improve to 4-5 for the season and 2-5 in SFL play. The Blue Devils slip to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in league, having entered the match in a tie for second place with Del Oro.
The Garcia/Mundhenk match was the last one standing, with the two teams in a 4-4 tie. It also marked the most lopsided victory for SF, although two other singles matches and the No. 2 doubles win came in straight sets. Sophomore Maria McDougall swept Hannah Proctor, 6-2, 6-4; for the No. 1 singles. Meanwhile, senior Tatum Walbeck dispatched Inkyung Hwang one court over by scores of 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
In doubles action, Litzy Alengaden and Ava Dezham outlasted Eva Wilson and Alison Young by a 7-5 score in the first set, then rolled to a 6-2 win in the second to complete their sweep. Troubie junior Sophia Troppmann and Blue Devil 11th grader Molly Nansen had the only split-set battle: Troppmann won the first, 6-3, then dropped the second, 6-4, before winning the one-game tiebreaker by a 10-4 decision.
The Troubies' win marked the first in the series with Davis since October 19, 2021, when St. Francis claimed an 8-1 road victory. The two programs were tied for second in the Delta League during that meeting. Walbeck is the lone active Troubie who competed officially in that match three years ago: she teamed with Allie Dinh (older sister to current senior Anna Dinh) for a win at No. 1 doubles.
Thursday's dual also ends the first half of the SFL schedule. The Troubies return to action at home on October 3 against Rocklin. That match, which starts at 4 p.m. at Rollingwood YMCA, also serves as the annual Booster-Q for tennis, so all fans are encouraged to attend and enjoy a free meal courtesy of the SF Booster Club.
