Thunder edges Troubies in SFL season opener

Thunder edges Troubies in SFL season opener

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Sophomore Maria McDougall rolled past Aarya Sharma Vats by scores of 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Sarah Ramos-Lasso and Arden Garcia each battled back from 6-4 first-set losses, but St. Francis ultimately fell to Rocklin by a 5-4 final in Sierra Foothill League girls' tennis dual action Monday.

The Troubadours move to 2-1 overall and begin their first SFL season at 0-1.

Ramos-Lasso stormed back from the early setback to claim a 6-3 second set over Thunder senior Ava Hudson, then easily took down a 10-3 one-game tiebreaker at No. 4 singles. Garcia had a similar arc in her victory at No. 5, snaring a 6-1 win over junior Nihal Chopra before also winning the tiebreaker by a 10-3 margin.

The fourth St. Francis victory came out of No. 2 doubles, as Ava Dezham and Nura Fananapazir breezed to a 6-2 win in the first set, dropped a 6-3 second, then rolled off a 10-2 win in the single-game third set.

The nature of Rocklin's eight-court home facility means the lone late-starting match was also the deciding match in the team scoring: Troubies Katharina Gensler and Emi Martin taking on the Thunder's Emme Stephan and Addie Savage. Both SF players plus Savage made their season debuts in what ended up as a 7-6, 6-4 battle.
