Troubies snare tight win over Davis in SFL finale

Troubies snare tight win over Davis in SFL finale
FAIR OAKS, Calif. – Junior Sophia Troppmann scored a break to finish a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles while one court over, senior Anna Dinh completed a comeback win at No. 4 singles, clinching St. Francis' 5-4 win over Davis in a Sierra Foothill League girls' tennis dual match at Rollingwood YMCA Thursday.

The Troubadours finish the regular season with a 9-7 overall dual record, 7-7 of which took place in league matchups. The Blue Devils move to 10-4 for the year and in SFL play, good for at least a share of second place. The top six teams in the SFL earn berths in the Sac-Joaquin Section postseason: Granite Bay, Davis, Oak Ridge, Del Oro, St. Francis and Folsom.

Dinh tumbled to a 6-1 loss in the first set against Davis junior Molly Nansen, then stormed back to a 6-3 win in the second. She then pulled away to a 10-5 win in the one-game third set. Soon after, Troppmann had Ciara Wallace down by a triple break and match point of 0-40, then watched as a shot missed long of the baseline.

Troppmann's victory ended up as the fifth and deciding win in the team competition. Maria McDougall and Alexandra Wallace previously made quick work of their Blue Devil opponents at Nos. 1 and 2 singles: McDougall at 6-2, 6-2 against Hannah Proctor, Wallace narrowly missing a double bagel with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over IN Hwang. Additionally, the No. 2 doubles tandem of Arden Garcia and Lena Mundhenk came away with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Riya Vij and Claire Shu.

Thursday's match also served as a de facto Senior Day match for the Troubies, who held their official sendoff a week earlier to avoid conflicts with Homecoming activities back at the SF campus. Still, the posters from the October 15 match hung from the Court 3 fence to honor Dinh, Litzy Alengaden, Ava Ensberg and Tatum Walbeck.

St. Francis now enters the postseason phase of the first year in the SFL and the first under head coach Matt Brunner. The Troubies head to Davis for the league singles championship on Monday, then return to Yolo County on Thursday for the doubles tourney.
