Troubie tennis hosts Modesto in SJS playoff opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis has drawn the No. 5 seed and will host 12th-seeded Modesto in the first round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I girls' tennis team championship, the governing body announced Thursday afternoon. The match will take place at the Troubadours' home facility of Rollingwood YMCA in Fair Oaks at approximately 2 p.m.

The Troubadours finished fifth in the Sierra Foothill League to earn a spot in the section playoffs. The Panthers finished fourth in the CCAL with a 6-4 league record.

In fact, the SFL occupies the top five seeds in the D-I bracket: No. 1 Granite Bay, No. 2 Oak Ridge, No. 3 Davis, No. 4 Del Oro and No. 5 St. Francis. Furthermore, Folsom snared the No. 9 seed of the 12-team field. The Grizzlies, Thunder, Golden Eagles and Troubies each have enrollments more similar to D-II but opted to play at the higher level.

Modesto represents the first St. Francis from the Joaquin side of the SJS, with the Troubadours' two non-league opponents – McClatchy and Cosumnes Oaks – hailing from the Metro and Delta leagues, respectively.

Leading St. Francis atop its singles ladder is sophomore Maria McDougall, who sported a 15-1 dual match record and a second-place showing in Monday's SFL singles championship. She will also represent the Troubies for the second straight year at the SJS individual tournament, held at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club on November 7 and 8.

The top four seeds in the SJS team bracket have byes to the quarterfinals. An SF win on Monday would result in a rematch with DO on Wednesday. The Troubies and Golden Eagles split their regular-season matchups, each taking down a 6-3 on their respective home courts.

A full bracket is now available at the SJS website (cifsjs.org) and on the tennis schedule at GoTroubies.com.
