BERKELEY, Calif. – St. Francis senior Arden Han-Wei finished in a four-way tie for 32nd place among 89 total players with an 18-hole total of 84 strokes as the program's lone qualifier to the CIF Northern California Region girls' golf championship, held at Berkeley Country Club Monday.
Han-Wei's 12-over-par score matched that of Lincoln's Isabella Bautista, Carondelet's Madison Delumen and Dougherty Valley's Rachel Lee. Only four players in the field finished under par, with Carondelet's Lily Peng claiming the individual medalist with a 4-under 68. Furthermore, only team champion Stevenson broke the 400-stroke barrier as a team, winning the NorCal title at 20-over 380. Granite Bay (401) finished second, while Carondelet (410), Monta Vista (411) and Valley Christian (411) battled closely for the next three team places.
So challenging was Berkeley CC's course that on 11 holes, the field average was more than a stroke over par. The par-4 14th proved the toughest, with the average player struggling to a 5.93. The field also averaged 91.91 for the day, with almost three times as many double bogeys (262) as birdies (98).
The tie for 32nd also stands as the best individual finish by a Troubadour at the NorCal tourney since Emily Laskin (T17th) and Tarah Kubes (T26th) helped the 2012 SF squad finish second at Brookside CC in Stockton. Marissa Mar tied for third in 2007 and Mina Harigae placed third outright the year before, although individual places are not available for the Troubies' NorCal appearances prior to 2006.
The region tourney wraps up an outstanding prep career for Han-Wei, the 2022 Delta League Player of the Year who earned first-team All-Delta or All-Sierra Foothill League every year since. She is in line to garner a fourth all-league honor when those awards become official at the end of November.
The top players from the Sac-Joaquin Section were Vista Del Lago's Abigail Lin, who finished fifth at even-par 72; Granite Bay's Serene Kim, tied for sixth at 73; Granite Bay's Hailey Peterson, tied for eighth at 74; and Lodi's Kelley O'Keefe, who shared 11th place with her 3-over 75.
