SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Audrey Ellis netted the lone varsity goal in a 20-1 loss, while Adrianna Perri and Isabella Leyva each scored in the Troubadours' 20-2 junior varsity setback, as St. Francis lost both ends of a Sierra Foothill League girls' water polo doubleheader against Whitney at Jesuit High Monday night.
The Troubie varsity loses its fourth straight game to move to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Ellis hit her goal with 19 seconds left in the third quarter, walking up to the 3/4 spot before burying an unassisted goal. This erased the shutout bid for the Wildcats, who led by a 13-0 margin at halftime.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sasha Michon finished with 10 saves, including two stops against five-meter penalty shots. St. Francis had 12, including nine on goal, but could not find the back of the net save for Ellis' third-quarter tally. Senior Sara Ellis came close to another SF goal in the fourth when she stole the ball in the Whitney backcourt, then attempted a short lob over the Whitney goalie that appeared to be on frame. However, the shot landed and stopped dead inches shy of the cage.
Like their older varsity sisters, the Troubie jayvees surrendered 16 straight goals before getting on the board, also late in the third quarter. Gabriella Philip fired an initial shot that missed bar-out, but Perri swooped in for the rebound and putback at two meters with 1:30 left in the frame. Then on the first SF possession of the fourth, goalie Audrey Solander sent a long outlet to Leyva, who converted that pass to a cross-cage, bar-in shot.
Still, Whitney held a 4-0 edge through the first quarter and an 11-0 lead at halftime. Marie Hennessy led the Wildcats with eight goals, with Aliyah Leinenweber adding a double hat trick.
St. Francis remains at home on Wednesday against Del Oro. The overall quadrupleheader with Jesuit begins with the girls' JV at 4 p.m. followed by girls' varsity at 5 p.m.
