JV returns to Granite Bay for tough SFL matchup

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Senior Rose Haag assisted sophomore Audrey Ellis for the lone Troubadour goal as St. Francis lost to Granite Bay, 27-1, in Sierra Foothill League girls' water polo action Wednesday night.

The Troubadours slip to 2-4 for the season and even their league record to 1-1. The Grizzlies, last year's Sac-Joaquin Section champions, improve to 2-1 overall and in SFL play.

SF netted its only goal in the fourth after surrendering a 17-0 halftime deficit and a 23-0 hole through three frames. The Troubies struggled to 19 turnovers in the first half alone.

Granite Bay senior Lucy Nihart tallied six goals, sophomore Avery Oldemeyer added five, while sophomore Tessa Gardin chipped in four goals, three assists and a team-leading four steals.

Prior to the varsity loss, St. Francis junior varsity also fell to the host Grizzlies by a 16-1 final. Freshman Kathryn Topp scored the lone Troubie goal in the second quarter.

The SF varsity squads makes a return trip up Interstate 80 on Friday and Saturday for the Woodcreek Invitational, held at the Roseville Aquatics Complex. The Troubies open with Sonora at 10:50 a.m. then take on Rio Americano for the 1:35 p.m. contest on Friday. Meanwhile, the jayvees are off until the back-to-back SFL home dates with Whitney (Monday) and Del Oro (Sept. 24).
