JV kicks off season at St. Mary's mini-tourney

CLOVIS, Calif. – Sophomore Emma Dietrich netted four goals while fellow 10th-grader Kendal Douglas scored two and assisted three others in St. Francis' 12-9 loss to Redwood in the seventh-place game of the Central Valley Showdown girls' prep water polo tournament Saturday.

The Troubadours fell to Edison, 13-4, in their morning matchup. They open their season with a 1-3 overall record.

Douglas also scored in the morning loss to the Tigers. Audrey Ellis had two in that game while her older sister, Sara, scored one. Edison burst to a 12-2 halftime lead, with St. Francis struggling to 2-for-17 shooting. Then in the nightcap, the offensive woes continued with the Troubies falling behind by a 6-2 deficit at the break. Dietrich popped two of the four SF goals in the third to close the gap to three goals entering the fourth, but Redwood stayed ahead for the remainder.

Maya Wenceslao and Frannie Wells also had goals in the afternoon contest.

Meanwhile, St. Francis junior varsity traveled to St. Mary's for the season-opening JV RAMpage. The Troubies fell to the host Rams by a 15-7 final, then dropped the nightcap to Bear Creek, 13-1. Molly Suggs hit three goals for the day: two vs. St. Mary's plus the lone goal against the Bruins.

Varsity goes idle until the September 10 home opener with Rocklin while JV comes back to another one-day tourney at McClatchy's CKM JV Opener on Sept. 6.
