GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Sophomore Molly Suggs pocketed four goals while freshman goalkeeper Audrey Solander tallied 11 saves to lift St. Francis to an 11-6 win over El Camino in its final game of the Granite Bay JV Jamboree water polo tournament Saturday.
The Troubadours picked up their first win of the year in that Day 2 finale, finishing 1-4 in the tourney and moving to 1-9 for the season.
Suggs had a goal in each quarter in the win over the Eagles: a counterattack finish in each of the first and second frames, a two-meter strike on an assist from fellow sophomore Gabriella Philip in the third, then a perimeter bomb off Solander's outlet pass with less than a minute remaining in the fourth.
The 11 total goals against EC represents a season high for SF, and matched the output in the three previous tournament contests: a 15-6 loss to Christian Brothers and 13-2 setback against Dixon in Friday's session, then a 13-3 loss to Nevada Union to open Saturday's play.
Georgi Williams led five Troubie scorers with two goals against CB, while Philip and Isabella Leyva each nabbed three steals. Freshman Kathryn Topp netted both scores in the loss to the Rams late on Friday, while she, Leyva and Williams had the three tallies against the Miners to open Saturday's action. Williams assisted Leyva on the Troubies' second goal in the first quarter, equalizing the contest at 2-2. Then Nevada Union's goalkeeper halted 16 straight SF shots from the second through late fourth frames, a stretch during which her offense piled up 13 straight goals. Solander, who had walked up to midtank for the final possession against NU, assisted Williams for a goal with four seconds remaining.
Besides Suggs' hat trick plus, Philip added two goals against El Camino, with Williams, Leyva, Topp, Adrianna Perri and Thais Gonzalez each chipping in one.
Philip highlighted the Troubie defense with 10 steals in the four games, including four against EC.
St. Francis returns to Granite Bay to face the Grizzlies in Sierra Foothill League play on Monday. In the league's Monday format, the varsity girls square off at 6 p.m. (or immediately after the boys' varsity game), with the JV girls following at 7 p.m.
