Gandhoke, Randall lead SF to fourth at SJS D-I meet

FOLSOM, Calif. – Sophomore Jasleen Gandhoke finished second in the girls' high jump with top-five finishes in each hurdles event, while Alexa Randall scored team points in two sprints and two relays, leading St. Francis to a fourth-place finish at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I track & field championships, held at Folsom High School's Prairie City Stadium Thursday night.

The Troubadours scored 58 points to finish behind Whitney (96.5), St. Mary's (79.5) and Davis (74.5), and well ahead of Pleasant Grove (41) and Granite Bay (40) in the final team standings.
The top nine finishers from the Division I meet, plus any at-large qualifiers, earn berths in the Sac-Joaquin Masters meet, from which athletes then qualify for the state meet. The exception to this rule is for the 4x800 relay: the top 16 teams from all five divisions score spots at the Masters championships.

Gandhoke matched St. Mary's junior Fekei George with a best jump of five feet, four inches, but finished second on attempts. In fact, when George and Gandhoke were left as the only remaining competitors after clearing 5-4, Gandhoke and her high jump coach Chuck Bruns seized an opportunity to claim the title. George opted to set the next height at 5-5. Gandhoke opted to pass, with the hopes that George would miss, after which point Gandhoke could attempt to match her personal record of 5-6. George did go 0-for-3 at 5-5, thus opening a path to victory for Gandhoke.

Gandhoke nearly captured the title in her first attempt, but barely clipped the bar with her calf on the way toward the pit. She ended up missing on her second and third attempts, thus keeping her at 5-4. Gandhoke then went on to place fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.57 seconds, then closed her meet with a personal-best 45.91 in the 300 hurdles – good for a fourth-place podium finish. In all, Gandhoke accounted for 17 of her team's 58 total points.

Randall enjoyed a successful overall day as the busiest Troubie of the meet. She began the afternoon by joining Gabriela Gonzalez, Emma Bugarin and Jada Dwyre for a fourth-place 48.68 in the 4x100 relay, the best of the season and the No. 10 mark in the St. Francis record book. Approximately 45 minutes later, Randall hit a PR of 57.49 in the 400, fifth in the meet and sixth in school history. She later placed fourth in the 200 at 25.54 for another trip the podium.
Finally, Randall anchored the 4x400 relay to fifth place with a team season-best 4:03.03, thanks to Nassali Serwanga, Colleen Medina and Brynn Baker spotting her a healthy start. In all, Randall scored nine points in the two individual events, while the two relays also chipped in another nine points in the final scoring.

St. Francis also picked up fourth-place points from senior Jada Dwyre, who went 12.57 in the 100; sixth-place scoring from Halle Welch and her 5:12.54 in the 1,600. Junior Antonija Jezildzic added an eighth in the shot put. She notched a career-best push of 30-11.5 on her second attempt, a mark that allowed her into the top 10 and granted her three more throws. Jezildzic then reset her PR to 31-0.75 on her final attempt of the night.

Freshman Miya Menza, who enjoyed a breakout 800 performance on Tuesday, decided to opt out of the 800 final to compete in the 3,200. This paid off with a ninth-place 11:33.10, missing the scoring finishes but grabbing the final advancement to the Masters Meet. Menza had previously helped SF to third place in the 4x800. Menza, Welch, Sunny Schranz and Sophia Kadel will also move on to next week's Masters field, with their 9:40.55 ranking fourth among teams from the five divisions.

The Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Trials and Finals take place at Folsom on May 23 and 24. The top three finishers from that meet, with the exception of the 4x800, move on to the 105th CIF State Championships at Buchanan High on May 30 and 31. The girls' 4x800 advances two teams, assuming each broke the minimum standard of 10:00.00.
