Track & field splits squads along I-80 corridor

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Sophomore Jasleen Gandhoke posted her fifth straight win in the girls' varsity high jump and junior Antonija Jezildzic moved eight inches closer to cracking the century mark in the discus throw at Granite Bay's GBHS Field Festival, while the all-freshman squad of Lydia Stralen, Sophia Hernandez, Emily Colonnello and Emilia Ryan finished second in the 4x800-meter relay at Oakmont's Valhalla Distance Carnival to highlight St. Francis at two different Placer County-based track & field meets Friday.

Gandhoke cleared 5-feet, 4-inches with plenty of room to spare; but came up just short in her three attempts at a personal record of 5-6. She is the lone Troubadour individual qualifier at the upcoming Stanford Invitational, ranking atop the Sac-Joaquin Section rankings with the 5-5 she posted back on March 5.

At that same meet, Jezildzic fired a personal-best throw of 99-2, improving on her previous PR by eight inches. She looks to become just the second Troubie to break 100 feet in the event since 2016. Lauren Riley is the last to do so, although even she did not beat the threshold her senior season. At this point in her career, Riley's best was still a 91-6 – coincidentally set at the second edition of the GB Field Festival.

Sophomore Tayli Paeu-Lindgren was the busiest St. Francis competitor for the day, tying for sixth in the high jump (4-8) while leading her squad with fifths in each of the long jump (16-0) and triple jump (32-10.25).

The Stralen-Hernandez-Colonnello-Ryan foursome was one of five St. Francis entries into the 4x800, compiling a runner-up time of 10 minutes, 40.92 seconds, roughly six seconds behind first-place and Avery Popejoy-led Rio Americano (10:34.30). Colonnello and Hernandez later had the top two Troubie finishes in the 3,200, respectively placing seventh (12:11.87) and eighth (12:13.90). In between, sophomore Mia Hollar led SF in the 800 with her eighth-place 2:34.34

The St. Francis sprinters and hurdlers await their turn to compete at Saturday at Bella Vista's Bronco Speed Festival. A handful of Troubies from Friday's meets are also entered at BV: Gandhoke, Ryan, Ava Harmatz, Mia Hollar, Alyssa Tafoya in at least one of the hurdles; plus Gandhoke, Rylee Coauette and Claire Bowman in open sprint events. The Bronco Speedfest begins at 9 a.m.
