Gandhoke, Menza lead Troubies at Halden Invite

Gandhoke, Menza lead Troubies at Halden Invite

DAVIS, Calif. – Sophomore Jasleen Gandhoke won the girls' varsity 300-meter hurdles with a personal-record time of 47.61 seconds while finishing second in the 100 hurdles and high jump, while freshman Miya Menza runnered-up in both distance events, leading St. Francis at Davis Senior High's Halden Invitational, held at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium Saturday.

Gandhoke crossed the finish line in 16.34 seconds, just ahead of Folsom's Grace Abello (16.39) but well behind McClatchy's Kate Hemesath (15.54) in the first and fastest heat of the event. She also cleared 5-foot-3 in the varsity high jump behind only Hemesath (5-5).

Menza competed in the meet's evening Distance Carnival, placing second in the 1,600 meters at 5:15.54 then finishing St. Francis' evening with a personal-best 11:12.68 in the 3,200. The latter slashed more than 13 full seconds from her previous PR of 11:25.93, set at the Sacramento State Classic in early March.

Besides Menza's finish, the 1,600 featured PRs from six Troubies, including Sunny Schranz (5:19.76) and Sophia Kadel (5:19.89) in eighth and ninth places. Similarly, nine SF runners enjoyed personal bests in the 800, with Halle Welch (2:26.39) and Schranz (2:28.99) leading the way.

Also among the Troubie highlights was the relay squad of Lucia Vicio, Alexa Randall, Emma Bugarin and Jada Dwyre finishing second in the Bud Henley 4x100 relay at 49.98. Randall and Dwyre later finished fourth and eighth, respectively, in the varsity 100-meter dash at 13.06 and 13.17. Although both have faster previous times, both runners achieved those marks despite stiff headwinds. Randall ran against a 3.8 meters per second breeze, while Dwyre went up against a 3.2 m/s headwind. For reference, a tailwind of 2.0 m/s renders a performance wind-assisted.

Sophomore Anastacia Uniza had the lone PR among the St. Francis field events, posting a 4-3 mark in the frosh-soph high jump – a performance made even more impressive given that she arrived at the end of the warmups, then cleared that height on her first attempt.
