Small but strong squad reps SF at Sac State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Jasleen Gandhoke won the girls' high jump with a leap of five feet, four inches; while freshman Halle Welch placed second in both distance events, leading a small pack of St. Francis student-athletes at the Sacramento State High School Track Classic at Hornet Stadium Saturday.

Gandhoke passed on three heights until clearing her first attempt at each of 4-10, 5-0 and 5-2. She and runner-up Jaiden Lynn of Shasta then both passed on 5-3, held for the benefit of Atwater senior Kyah Mckellar. Gandhoke and Lynn each beat 5-4 before finally stalling at 5-6. Gandhoke earned the event tiebreaker thanks to making 5-2 on her first try, while Lynn hit that jump on her second attempt.

Welch crossed the finish line in 11 minutes, 17.63 seconds in the 3,200, with SF teammates Miya Menza and sophomore Sunny Schranz not far behind in fourth (11:25.93) and fifth (11:36.86), respectively. Welch outdueled Oak Ridge's Adriana Ingargiola in the 3,200 but runnered-up to the Trojan junior in the 1,600 with a 5:18.57 time. However, she did beat out another OR runner, sophomore Maya Day, by just 27 hundredths of a second.

Troubadour freshman Sophia Kadel also enjoyed a third-place 2:25.63 in the 800, leading a foursome of SF runners.

St. Francis had 22 entries in the meet, Gandhoke joined Norah White in both hurdles events. Seniors Kyra Lueras and Lucie Pickering Pick joined their younger teammates in the 800 and 3,200, respectively. Freshman Mackenna Miller took part in each of the 800 and 1,600. Antonija Jezildzic and Maysen Boswell competed in both throws events, while Olivia Santos took part in the high jump with Gandhoke.

The Sac State Classic closes out a busy opening stretch for St. Francis, which competed in four meets over the span of eight days. The Troubies take a week off from competition, returning to action at the second Sierra Foothill League double dual on Wednesday, March 19. They face both Rocklin and Whitney in the Wildcat-hosted center meet.
