Troubie players, coaches well-repped at Optimist All-Stars
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Libero Malia Fat, defensive specialist Chloe Johnson and middle blocker Mercy Collier will represent St. Francis on the South large-school squad at the 2025 Sacramento Breakfast Optimist Girls' Volleyball All-Star this Saturday, the club officials announced Wednesday.

Additionally, the match will take place at St. Francis High School, with Troubadour head coach Taryn Campbell and assistant coach Bill Hanrahan serving as the South staff.

The annual senior all-star match has moved around in recent years from its previous home at Capital Christian (now Destiny Christian), including the 2024 venue of Folsom Lake College. The small-school match takes place at 11 a.m. with the large-school match following at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, with all proceeds supporting Optimist International's educational programs for children. Cash and Venmo transactions will be accepted at the door.

St. Francis is one of three schools with three representatives on the South large-school team, along with Rio Americano (Camden Kalhoff, Kendall Carey and Kate Ellis) and Woodcreek (Samantha Campanale, Lily Saldivar and Madison Walsh). The South squad also features seniors from Davis, Franklin, Laguna Creek, River City, Vacaville and West Park.

Not surprisingly, the Troubies' fellow Sierra Foothill League members dominate the North large-school team. Oak Ridge (London Welcher, Kaya Charles, Mady Snyder and Ella Hieb) and Rocklin (Ava Pabalate, Devon Schweitzer, Rylee Heinz and Gianna Boga) each have four selections, with Del Oro (Bella Rossi, Lily Smith and Sophia Sampson) owning three. Folsom's Devin Elmore and Jess Ponik will coach the North team, with Bulldogs Hadassah Makama and Khloe Wong earning spots in the match. The North team also has representation from Inderkum and Monterey Trail.

St. Francis enjoyed one of its best seasons of the best decade, reaching the NorCal Regional title match for the first time in 12 years and finishing with a 35-9 overall record. Fat led the Troubies with 463 digs, edging junior teammate Hailey Sutton (437) among the team's six-rotation players. Johnson, who committed to play collegiate ball at Biola University, added 16 aces and 137 digs. Collier joined teammate Marissa Jensen as a potent middle blocking platoon, delivering 105 kills and a .235 average on offense plus 74 digs on defense.

St. Francis Catholic High School is located at 5900 Elvas Avenue in the East Sacramento neighborhood. Parking is relatively limited in front of campus, so families are advised to enter the student/senior lots (immediate right turn after entering the lot), then walk to the exterior gym entrance on Elvas.
