GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Junior opposite Gilly Glikman hammered out a team-leading eight kills and a .467 hitting average while junior outside hitter Hailey Sutton added five kills and six aces to lead St. Francis to a 25-12, 25-11, 25-22 sweep of Granite Bay to close out a Sierra Foothill League girls' volleyball tripleheader Monday night.
The Troubadours improve to 14-2 for the season and pick up their first league win to move to 1-2.
Junior Sophia Palmeri matched Sutton's five kills while committing no hitting errors. Senior middle blocker Mercy Collier also tallied five kills, with fellow middle Marissa Jensen hitting 4-0-10 for the night. Sutton also led on floor defense with 10 digs with libero Malia Fat following with nine. Magley also joined in on the serving game with three aces, the last of which helped pull SF from an 18-17 deficit to a 21-17 lead in the third.
As the score suggests, the third set was the only one in which the Grizzlies challenged late. Palmeri had three kills in the late stages of the first to help the Troubies score 10 straight to pull to a 24-11 set point. Then in the second, Glikman scored three straight kills to boost the SF lead to 18-9, with Fat's ace making it a 10-point cushion at 19-9.
In the third, Sutton served up three aces in a span of five unanswered SF points to establish an 8-3 lead, only to see that advantage wither into a 12-11 GB lead after a lift call went against the Troubies. Sidney Palmeri, Layla Hernandez and Sutton helped SF recover when three consecutive offspeed hits found some open Grizzly court to reclaim a 14-12 lead. However, senior Brielle Honebein led GB with a kill (on an SF net violation) and a block assist with opposite Breana Ledell as part of a 4-0 run, putting the hosts back on top, 16-14.
St. Francis managed to equalize at 16-16 on a Sutton tip and 17-17 on Jensen's kill on an overpass, the latter of which put Magley on the service line. The junior setter served up the go-ahead ace, then two unforced Granite Bay errors stretched SF's lead to three at 20-17, prompting a Grizzly timeout. Jensen picked up a free kill on a GB net violation to make it five straight and a 21-17 Troubie lead.
Sutton hit a four ball long to help GB get back to within a single point at 21-20, but she atoned for the error with a smash for the 22nd. That also sent her to the service line for her final ace and a 23-20 lead. Jensen and Sophia Palmeri combined for a block to set up match point at 24-21. GB senior Allison Powell stuffed a Troubie shot for a critical side out, but the next Grizzly serve fell harmlessly into the net to seal the win for St. Francis.
Monday's victory extended the series streak to eight straight wins for the Troubadours, dating back to a tournament meeting in October 2017.
St. Francis frosh and junior varsity also posted sweeps against their respective Grizzly foes. The frosh squad won by scores of 25-12, 25-10 in the auxiliary court, and finished its match so fast that the team walked next door to watch the majority of JV's second set. The Troubie jayvees captured a 25-17, 25-18 win as the lead-in to the varsity match.
All three SF teams return home for continued league play against Whitney on Wednesday. Match times are 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. for frosh through varsity, respectively.
