SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Juniors Hailey Sutton and Sophia Palmeri combined for 19 kills with just two errors as St. Francis hit .337 as a team in a 25-20, 25-15, 25-10 sweep of Whitney in the varsity finale of a Sierra Foothill League girls' volleyball tripleheader Wednesday night.
The Troubadours improve to 15-2 overall and even their league record to 2-2.
Sutton finished at 12-1-18 for a .611 average while Sophia Palmeri added a 7-1-12 (.500) attack chart. Opposites Gilly Glikman and Layla Hernandez chipped in seven and six kills, respectively, with Mercy Collier (five), Sidney Palmeri (four) and Chloe Johnson (two) also scoring multiple kills. Credit the setting trio of Brynley Magley (14 assists), Katie Kramer (10) and Hiedi Vu (nine) for steering the offense. St. Francis' offense peaked in the third set with 12 kills with no errors on 24 attempts.
Glikman led the Troubie net defense with four blocks, while Sutton and Malia Fat each picked up eight of the team's 54 digs.
St. Francis never trailed in the match, although Whitney did mount strong comeback runs in each of the first and second frames. In the first set, sophomore Emi Stephens teamed up for two blocks and served up back-to-back aces as part of a 5-1 run that pulled the Wildcats to within a 21-18 margin. Hernandez had three kills down the stretch to help the Troubies complete the win.
Then in the second, Vu served two aces in an 8-0 start to the frame, while Sidney Palmeri hit three kills in a span of five points to keep the Troubies out front by a 19-8 margin. St. Francis stumbled to a pair of attacking errors, and Stephens and Claire Curtis each pounded out kills to bring Whitney within striking distance of 20-14. However, Glikman turned in consecutive kills by the right pin to extend SF's lead back to eight at 22-14, then Collier smacked down 1 balls for the 24th and 25th Troubie points.
St. Francis fired off six of its 10 total aces – two by Sutton and two by Kelsey Granner – in a dominating third set that also featured that 12-0-24 offensive outburst.
The team's .337 attack rate is the Troubies' best for a full-length match since hitting .357 in the Holy Court win over Christian Brothers on August 30.
Prior to the varsity win, St. Francis frosh and junior varsity also took down wins in straight sets. The frosh posted a 25-10, 25-17 sweep. Hayley Vu highlighted the first set with six aces, all in a 13-0 run that extended a 4-3 lead to a 17-3 advantage. Molly Moyer and Gabby Costantino each scored four kills in the second.
The Troubie JV rolled to a 25-14 win in the first set but had to come back from a 21-17 deficit and a 24-22 set point to take down a 27-25 win in the second. Setter Emily Simpson dumped in a ball to hold off the initial set point, then a Wildcat attacking error tied the frame at 24-24. Whitney had another set point of 25-24 when the next serve fell short of the tape, but Maura McManus' offspeed shot fall in for the 25-25 equalizer. Freshman setter Quinn Castro followed with service aces on either side of a Wildcat timeout.
The SF jayvees improve to 20-1 for the year while the frosh now sits at 18-1. Both are undefeated in their four league matches.
The Troubies resume SFL play on Monday at home against Del Oro, but not before the JV squad heads south to the 209 area code for the 17th edition of the Stockton Classic on Saturday. Opponents, times and sites will be available on Thursday at 209volleyball.com.
