DAVIS, Calif. – Junior outside hitter Hailey Sutton led St. Francis in kills (18), hitting (.500), service aces (four) and digs (13) in a 25-19, 25-20, 25-17 sweep at Davis in the Sierra Foothill League girls' volleyball season finale Wednesday night.
The Troubadours improve to 30-7 for their first 30-win season since 2019 (36-3), and move to 8-6 in league play. The Blue Devils slip to 13-18 for the year with a 2-12 SFL record.
Sutton committed only three hitting errors on 30 total attempts en route to her .500 average, her best efficiency rate since going .611 (12-1-18) against Whitney back on September 17. Wednesday's performance also marked her fourth straight double-double and her eighth overall for the year.
Joining Sutton on the left side was junior Sophia Palmeri, who hit 13 kills for a .321 clip. Junior opposite Layla Hernandez added another seven kills and senior middle blocker Marissa Jensen hit 4-for-5 as St. Francis compiled a solid .270 attack rate as a team. Defensively, libero Malia Fat finished with 12 digs while setter Katie Kramer notched another 11.
Despite winning in straight sets, St. Francis had to come from behind in each of the three sets. Blue Devil senior Isabella Garma-Murphy had two kills in a 6-4 start for her team, while her third kill gave DSHS an 8-7 lead. Then Sutton put down three straight kills to lift the Troubies to their first lead. Kramer later served up an ace and Sutton put down another four ball to complete a 7-1 run, resulting in a 14-9 SF lead. That stretch extended to 12-2 overall, with Palmeri and Hernandez tooling each side of the Davis block en route to a 20-13 advantage.
Then in the second set, Garma-Murphy served up an ace while fellow senior Catherine Hanson scored a tool of her own to boost the Blue Devils to an early 11-6 lead. Kramer and Gigi Dickerson each served up aces with Jensen and Mercy Collier posting kills in a comeback to 13-1, one of nine ties in the set. Sutton hit back-to-back to give SF the lead for good at 20-19, then she added another tool and an ace down the stretch in completing the 25-20 win.
Sutton's fourth ace came as part of a 5-1 start to the third, with Hernandez finding a pair of kills in that run. The Troubies soon followed by surrendering six unanswered, with a pair of attacking errors spotting the Blue Devils with an 8-6 lead. Head coach Taryn Campbell called a timeout to settle down her team, with Palmeri's kill and a Harper Rios ace equalizing at 8-8.
Still, St. Francis did not reclaim the final lead until a Davis service error and a Kramer ace made it 14-12. Fat later served up the Troubies' 12 ace of the match amidst a 4-0 run that resulted in a 19-14 lead. SF finished with another five straight, with Sutton scoring the final three in completing the sweep.
All three Troubadour squads won in straight sets, with frosh coming back from a 10-point deficit to take a 25-23, 25-17 victory in the opener, followed by junior varsity posting a 25-15, 25-21 sweep. St. Francis frosh finishes the season with a 29-3 record, 13-1 in the SFL. The jayvees close out with an even more impressive 32-3 mark and a perfect 14-0 mark against the league.
St. Francis will now learn its fate in the Sac-Joaquin Section postseason. The Troubadours, assigned to Division II for the first time since 2009, entered Wednesday's action ranked No. 4 in that tier behind No. 1 Rocklin, No. 2 Woodcreek and No. 3 Del Oro. Brackets will be announced on Friday afternoon.
