Troubies sweep Vista in season-opening Foundation match

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior outside hitter Hailey Sutton hit nine kills with just three errors, opposite Gilly Glikman in six of her team's 13 blocks while senior Malia Fat led the floor defense with 11 digs to go with three service aces, as St. Francis swept Vista Del Lago in three sets, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19, in a Peter J. Saco Foundation volleyball match Wednesday night.

The match does not count toward season win-loss records, stats or playoff seeding, but rather serves as one of many fundraisers throughout the Sac-Joaquin Section for the A. Dale Lacky Scholarship and Women In Sports Conference. Even the match officials volunteered their services in support of these educational programs.

In all, the Troubadours won the match through their defensive efforts rather than offensive. Fat's 11 gets led a total of 66 digs, with Sutton and Sidney Palmeri adding 10 apiece and senior Chloe Johnson scooping up another eight. Middle blocker Mercy Collier took part in another four stuffs at the net. Fat and sophomore setter Harper Rios also served up three aces to lead that department.

Overall, 14 SF players saw action in at least two of the three sets. Glikman and Johnson chipped in five kills, Palmeri added another four, while senior middle Marissa Jensen hit 3-for-5 for the match. Overall, the Troubies relied on just 31 kills with a .178 hitting percentage to amass their 75 points, picking up nine from service aces plus the 13 blocks.

Rios had all three of her aces in succession as part of a 6-0 overall serving run, helping SF pull to a 12-5 start in the first set. That margin extended to nine on Katie Kramer's ace at 19-10 before Vista rallied back to a 19-14 deficit. The Eagles' Maddy Shaw had two aces in the brief comeback, although one came courtesy of a rotation violation. Still, Vista never pulled any closer than a five-point difference, with three straight attacking errors – one due to Jensen's second solo block of the opener – helping the Troubies claim the initial set lead.

St. Francis rolled out to six straight points to start the second, with Glikman and Collier totaling three blocks in that outburst. That pair combined on yet another stuff to make it 10-1, with a Vista error later putting the SF lead to double digits at 19-9. Sutton subsequently put down back-to-back kills to give her team a 21-13 edge. Another Glikman block provided set point at 24-17, sending Fat to the service line. Her first attempt caught a bunch of the tape, then tumbled harmlessly onto the Vista side for an ace.

The third set proved to be the closest battle of the three, although SF never trailed at any point. An errant Vista set, a Sutton four ball and back-to-back Troubie blocks extended a 7-6 lead to 11-6. Two more Eagle errors and Sutton's eight kill boosted that lead to 14-6. Vista later closed to within three points when Lily Smith's roll shot found some open court, setting the board at 19-16. In the end, service aces from Fat and Kramer plus kills from Glikman and Johnson helped keep SF out front en route to the 25-19 win and the sweep.

Wednesday's Foundation Match featured only varsity teams. The St. Francis junior varsity squad is the next in action, taking part in Folsom's Bulldog Bash tourney on Saturday. Then all three Troubie volleyball teams convene at home on Tuesday for a non-league tripleheader against Vacaville. Match times are scheduled for 4:30 (frosh), 5:30 (JV) and 6:30 (varsity).
