CLOVIS, Calif. – Senior pole vaulter Maddie Pelfrey posted a season-best leap of 12 feet, 3 inches on her third attempt en route to placing 14th in the girls' pole vault, while junior Grace Dunham placed 16th in the 1,600-meter run with a time of five minutes, 3.55 seconds, representing St. Francis in Friday's session of the 103rd CIF State Track & Field Championships, hosted at Buchanan High School's Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Pelfrey, who committed to compete for Big West Conference member UC Santa Barbara, wraps up a career that saw her set the Troubadours' school record, snare a Delta League individual title (2022) and capture the program's first Sac-Joaquin Section pole vault title in two decades. She cleared the opening height of 11-9 on her second jump, then was one of 14 of the 26 entrants to best 12-3. Seven other athletes also were eliminated at 12-3, but Pelfrey did not earn one of the 12 spots to move on to Saturday's final based on attempts.
Meanwhile, Dunham started with a 1:14.24 opening lap and came home with a final split of 1:14.55 en route to her final time of 5:03.55, her fastest mark other than the 5:02.27 she ran at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet one week prior. Dunham wraps up a season in which she was the lone individual Delta League champion in track & field. She returns to action on Saturday night as part of a 4x800 relay with Kelsey Sutch, Kayla Towne and Daphne Witherell. That crew competes at 8:50 as SF's third entry into the state meet.
The state championship meet culminates the first season under head coach Chad Worthen, who also earned Delta League Coach of the Year honors for his champion cross country team last fall.
