Troubie track opens new season at Oakmont

Troubie track opens new season at Oakmont

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Junior Kayla Towne won the girls' 800-meter run with a time of two minutes, 22.0 seconds, then helped the 4x400 relay squad capture that event at 4:18.60, leading St. Francis in the season-opening Glenn Poole Invitational high school track & field meet at Oakmont High Saturday.

The Troubadours, despite fielding a relatively small contingent, finished third as a team with 53 points.

Towne finished almost seven full seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, Del Campo's Alix LeBlanc (2:28.72), in the 800 win. The foursome of Towne, Pamela Vargas, Grace Dunham and Sarah Charles later won its heat by more than 15 seconds, and bested the field by a margin of nine seconds.

Sophomore Jada Dwyre added a third event win for the Troubies, capturing the frosh-soph 100-meter dash with a 13.65 despite a 1.8 meters per second headwind. Dwyre also anchored the frosh-soph 4x100 relay to a 55.25, joining Ella Rose, Penelope Cole and Lucia Vicio.

Cole, Charles, Dunham and Kelsey Sutch also posted medalist finishes in their respective events. Cole went 1:06.83 in the frosh-soph 400, Dunham ran 11:45.87 in the varsity 3,200 to lead a 3-4-5 pack in the day's first running event, and Sutch runnered-up in the varsity 1,600 at 5:26.99. Charles took part in one of the closest races of the day: she finished second in the first heat (and overall) with a 1:01.524 in the varsity 400. Granite Bay's Kylie Nasca won that event by just .06, while Oakmont's Lily Harline crossed a mere four thousands of a second behind Charles for third.

This was the 17th running of the Glenn Poole Invite, named in honor of the former coach and athletics director who served the Vikings from 1965 to 1991, along with stints at Colfax, Roseville and Mesa Verde. The meet annually includes such favorites as a 400 for kids ages 10 and under, plus an all-throwers 4x100 relay.

Saturday's meet also kicks off the first season under new head coach Chad Worthen. The Troubies return to action in less than a week with the 84th Le Febvre Relays at Placer High on Friday.
