Pelfrey, Towne lead SF at Bronco Roundup

FAIR OAKS, Calif. – Senior Maddie Pelfrey and junior Kayla Towne finished second in the pole vault and 1,600-meter run, respectively, to lead the St. Francis delegation at Bella Vista's Bronco Roundup Distance & Pole Vault Carnival Friday night.

Pelfrey was one of three athletes to clear 11 feet, 4.0 inches, along with Pleasant Grove's Abigail Wagner and Dublin's Victoria Bradley. However, Wagner won the event based on attempts, with Pelfrey and Bradley taking second and third accordingly. Meanwhile, Towne crossed the finish line in five minutes, 3.69 seconds, trailing only Galena's Eleanor Raker (4:55.43) among the 183 total finishers in the event.

In addition to the two Troubadour runner-up finishes, senior Daphne Witherell placed fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:22.62, once place ahead of teammate Grace Dunham (11:24.27). Dunham also took fifth in the 1,600 at 5:12.86.

The Bronco Roundup distance events consisted of multiple heats, with the top three finishers in a given heat earning a commemorative T-shirt. The winner for a given event earned a decorated cowboy hat. T-shirt winners included Chloe' Hickey (800 heat 8), Rebecca Mochel (1,600 heat 2), Bianca Espanola (1,600 heat 2), Jordan Brace (1,600 heat 4), Mykaela Le (1,600 heat 5), Grace Himmelmann (1,600 heat 5), Elizabeth Gibbons (1,600 heat 7) plus Towne and Pelfrey.

The Bella Vista meet continued a busy stretch for the Troubies, who competed two days earlier at the first Delta League center meet at Davis. The sprinters and field event athletes will take part in Rocklin's Thunder Invitational on Saturday, then the full squad hosts Christian Brothers for the rescheduled Holy Spikes rivalry meet on Tuesday.
