DAVIS, Calif. – Junior Kayla Towne won the varsity 800-meter run with a season best of two minutes, 18.56 seconds, leading four St. Francis runners in the top five, highlighting her team's appearance in the first of two Delta League track & field center meets at Davis' Ron & Mary Brown Stadium Wednesday night.
Towne's mark improves her standing for the Arcadia Invitational in two weeks, although she will also have another opportunity at Bella Vista's Bronco Roundup meet on Friday. Teammate Grace Dunham finished behind her in the varsity 800 at 2:24.36, while Kelsey Sutch placed fourth (2:27.04) and Daphne Witherell took fifth (2:27.82) for the Troubadours.
The Troubies' 4x100 frosh-soph relay squad of Ella Rose, Holland Sperber, Lucia Vicio and Colleen Medina won with a 54.46 clocking. St. Francis also enjoyed high finishes from junior Caitlin Hafenstein, who placed third in the varsity 100-meter dash at 13.35; and Medina, who led a 4-5-6 Troubie finish in the frosh-soph 100 race with a 13.88. Medina later placed second in the 200 with a 28.29.
Among field events, freshman Antonija Jezildzic won the frosh-soph shot put with a push of 26 feet, 4.5 inches. She added a third-place finish in the frosh-soph discus with a personal record of 75-1. Madison Pelfrey posted an 11-6 leap in the pole vault, matching Pleasant Grove's Abigail Wagner, although Wagner won the event based on attempts.
Wind readings were not taken for sprints or horizontal jumps, invalidating any possible school records.
The center meet is the first of three meets for St. Francis in the current week. The relevant event groups will compete at Bella Vista's Bronco Roundup Distance and Pole Vault carnival on Friday, while the rest of the team heads to Rocklin for the Thunder Invitational on Saturday.
Furthermore, the Troubies rescheduled their annual "Holy Spikes" rivalry dual with Christian Brothers. Originally scheduled for March 14, the meet is now on March 28 at Jesuit.
