ELK GROVE, Calif. – Junior Grace Dunham won the girls' 1,600-meter run with a time of five minutes, 7.47 seconds, to capture the lone St. Francis individual varsity title on the second day of the Delta League Track & Field Championships, hosted by Elk Grove High School Tuesday night.
The Troubadours placed fourth as a team with 98 team points. Davis dominated its way to the title with 186, with Pleasant Grove (119) and Franklin (114) finishing in a close battle for second.
Dunham ranked fifth in the Sac-Joaquin Section entering the meet, and held the No. 3 seed from Saturday's finals. However, she passed league leader Norah Dulaney of Davis and teammate Kayla Towne on the bell lap to snare first place and the All-Delta League patch. Dulaney ranks No. 2 in the section, with Towne at No. 4.
The Dunham-Towne combo provided a 16-point boost toward the Troubadours' overall team score, the most for SF in any varsity event during the meet. Towne later edged Dunham in the 800 meters for fourth place in the event. Towne crossed in 2:21.66, Dunham in 2:21.73 for fifth, plus junior Kelsey Sutch adding seventh-place points with a PR of 2:23.29.
For her part, Sutch improved almost three seconds from her seed time of 2:26.58, which in turn had been her fastest time since her previous best of 2:25.80 – set back in April of her freshman season. That SF trio accounted for 11 points in the team standings.
Senior Sarah Charles finished second and scored eight team points in the 400-meter dash, lopping off exactly a half second from her previous personal best to finish in 59.08. The future Chapman Panther previously ran a 59.58 at Rocklin's Thunder Invitational and 59.59 at the Sacramento Meet of Champions.
Caitlin Hafenstein and Kyah Pickett collectively scored another eight points in the 100-meter final. Hafenstein finished third at 12.44, with Pickett two places and 0.24 behind in fifth (13.68). In fact, Pickett beat Elk Grove's Olivia Woods by just three thousands of a second for that extra team point: Pickett's 12.674 to Woods' 12.677.
Among the field athletes, senior Lauren Riley and Elise Blomquist finished fourth (109-4) and eighth (91-5), respectively, in the varsity discus.
Meanwhile, the Troubadours enjoyed multiple frosh-soph event wins. Freshman Abbey Pavelchik cleared 4-foot-8 to claim the high jump title, improving on her previous personal record by an inch. The 4x100 relay squad of Anastasia Maruccia, Holland Sperber, Lucia Vicio and Colleen Medina claimed the first girls' running event of the day with a 53.20 clocking.
Medina went on to finish second in each of the 200 (28.96) and 400 (1:02.28), the latter establishing a new PR by just .02. The runner-up finish matched that of freshman Antonija Jezildzic, who threw 88-2 in the frosh-soph discus throw. Maysen Boswell placed third in that same event with a 79-9 toss.
St. Francis now has more than a week off until the CIF-SJS Division I championships, held at Folsom High on May 10 and 12. The top eight finishers in each varsity event at the Delta League meet advances to the section championship.
