Troubies post strong times at BV and Stanford

FAIR OAKS, Calif. – Junior Caitlin Hafenstein posted two top-five overall finishes at Bella Vista's Bronco Speed Festival while junior Kayla Towne notched a team season best in the 800 meters at the prestigious Stanford Invitational, highlighting St. Francis track & field in another split-squad day of action Saturday.

Hafenstein finished third among 89 total finishers in the 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 12.93 seconds, then followed with a fifth-place 27.13 in the 200 to finish her day at BV. The meet officials reversed the direction of the 100 to allow runners with a tailwind, with Hafenstein's heat recording a wind velocity of 2.1 meters per second (2.0 mps is the legal limit for a record). Her previous best was a 13.18 at this very meet one year ago.

Hafenstein also took part in the Troubadours' second-place 4x100 relay, which compiled a 51.53 to edge Rio Americano's 51.56 time. She was joined in that foursome by Michaela Romo, who enjoyed a fourth-place 1:03.14 in the 400; and Kyah Pickett, who finished fourth in the 100 at 12.96.

Romo now has SF's second-fastest quarter of the year, behind only Sarah Charles' 59.58 at Rocklin one week earlier. Pickett has also broken the 13-second mark in the 100 in back-to-back meets, although both were wind-aided: a 12.95 (3.0 mps) at Rocklin and the 12.96 on Saturday (2.5 mps).

Meanwhile, some 150 miles to the southwest, Towne ran the 800 in 2:17.03, missing her own personal record by just five hundredths of a second. Her best remains the 2:16.98 in last year's Sac-Joaquin Section D-I final, good for sixth in school history.

Towne is one of two St. Francis individual qualifiers to the Arcadia Invitational next Friday and Saturday. She is currently entered in the open 800 meters, while senior Maddie Pelfrey made the invitational pole vault for the second straight year. The Troubies also qualified teams to the seeded 4x800 relay, invitational 4xmile relay and invitational distance medley relay. More specific information on the SF entries will be posted to GoTroubies.com in the week leading up to the meet.
