Late Whitney rallies spoil SF comeback effort

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior shortstop Kylee Garrett hit 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and another batted in, while Reese Lewis and Kaili Heeb each collected two hits and RBI, but St. Francis had its two-run comeback rally in the fifth spoiled when Whitney piled up 10 runs in the final two innings, capping a wild 12-4 Troubadour loss in Sierra Foothill League softball action at Schuster Field Monday.

SF drops to 5-21 overall and 0-13 in league games. The Wildcats, ranked fourth in the Sac-Joaquin Section by MaxPreps, improves to 19-7 for the year with a 9-4 mark in the SFL.

Claire Krotine, Jaeya Leavitt, Alexis McFarland, Marissa Jensen, Jocelyn Villaflor and Isabella Barge also had one hit apiece for the Troubies, with Villaflor and Barge ripping doubles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Whitney took an early lead when junior Brooklyn Steele doubled to center in the second inning, then junior Bailey Reynolds followed with a two-run single, scoring Steele and senior first baseman Grace Boyd. However, the Wildcats failed to bring in any more runs during the next four innings despite plenty of opportunities to do so. They stranded the bases loaded in the third, and had a second Steele double come up empty in the fifth. A Garrett-to-Leavitt-to-Jensen double play prior to Steele's hit helped keep Whitney from adding to the board.

Meanwhile, St. Francis moved runners into scoring position in the second and fourth but did not get on the board until the fifth. Leavitt and McFarland each drilled singles, the latter of which came with two outs. Lewis then drove in Leavitt with her single to center, and Jensen followed Lewis with an RBI single of her own. This erased the lead, tying up the game at 2-2.

Unfortunately for the Troubies, a fielding error and throwing error early in the sixth opened the door to seven unearned runs for Whitney in the top of the sixth. The Wildcats barreled five hits in that frame, including a bases-loaded double off the bat of left fielder Sidney Kleiner turned the 2-2 tie into a commanding 9-2 advantage.

St. Francis managed to get one run back in each of the final two innings. Garrett led off the sixth with a walk, then scored on a wild pitch and a Heeb hit to right. Villaflor's double to right followed Heeb's hit but Whitney freshman Taylor Cordell, who replaced starter Paige Tamblyn in that key fifth, recorded the punchout to keep any further Troubie runs from scoring.

Whitney posted four more runs in the seventh, with Steele's triple to the right-field corner bringing in the 12th Wildcat run. Garrett, who last assumed the pitching circle early in her JV career, came in to face Reynolds with two outs and Steele awaiting on third. Reynolds lifted the first offering from Garrett into left, into the waiting glove of sophomore Ariella Alcantar.

Still, Cordell continued to deal in the seventh, striking out the first two Troubies she faced. Barge's double to center followed by Garrett's RBI single reduced the deficit to 12-4, but Whitney center fielder Rebecca Rau ran down Heeb's fly to center, finishing the relief win for Cordell.

St. Francis heads into its regular-season finale on Wednesday against Davis. The Troubies will honor seniors Garrett, Krotine and Emma Fox prior to the 5 p.m. first pitch. The home date also features the program's annual Booster-Q barbecue, with free hot dogs and hamburgers for all guests.
