Grizzlies run-rule Troubies in return to SFL play

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Junior Reese Lewis rapped out a double as one of four Troubadour hits while sophomore righthander Kinsley Imm settled down to three scoreless innings after falling into an initial 2-0 hole, but St. Francis surrendered two late-inning rallies to lose to Granite Bay by a 10-0 final in Sierra Foothill League fastpitch action Wednesday afternoon.

The Troubadours, returning to SFL play after almost a two-week break, slip to 2-15 overall and remain winless in league at 0-8. The Grizzlies even their season ledger to 8-8-1 with a 4-5-1 league record.

Junior center fielder Alexis McFarland dropped in a single to center in the first inning, Lewis led off the second to her double to center, senior right fielder Claire Krotine legged out a bunt single in the third, and junior left fielder Marissa Jensen roped a base hit with two out in the fourth. Junior second baseman Jaeya Leavitt walked twice in her two plate appearances, and was on first on Krotine's bunt. Both players moved into scoring position on a passed ball, but that proved to be the closest SF came to getting on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, GB left fielder Alyssa Howell got her team going with a two-run double in the first, a slim lead that held through five. Howell inadvertently helped ignite a three-run rally in the fifth. With two outs and runners at the corners, the Grizzlies scored on a double steal on a ball inside. Howell trotted to first base, believing she was hit by pitch, a ruling that would also have returned the two runners to their respective bases. Instead, Howell returned to the plate, allowing the steal of home to stand. Two pitches later, Howell swung and missed for an inning-ending strike three, and appeared to return to her dugout – thus abandoning any advancement on the dropped strikeout pitch. However, the GB coaches noticed the situation and quickly sent Howell running to first, where she beat out the throw.

The two oddities left the door open in the fifth, allowing the Grizzlies to push across two more runs on RBI singles. Granite Bay held a 5-0 lead going into the sixth, during which senior reliever Paetynn Snobar retired the Troubies in order. The Grizzlies tacked on five more runs, thanks to a three-run blast from shortstop Leilani Terrazas and a walk-off two-run homer from starting pitcher-turned-designated player Cam Lincoln.

For her part, C. Lincoln finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs while firing four scoreless innings with six strikeouts in the pitching circle.

St. Francis takes another respite from SFL play with the two-day NorCal Leadoff Classic in Tracy. The Troubies will face Kimball on Thursday's 10 a.m. game, then either Los Banos or Berkeley at 2 p.m. that afternoon as part of the "Big 12" bracket.
