SF water polo swept at Whitney

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior Frannie Wells assisted Maya Wenceslao and Audrey Ellis on goals in the second and third quarters, respectively, but St. Francis fell by a 21-2 margin to Whitney in the varsity girls' portion of a Sierra Foothill League water polo quadrupleheader Wednesday night.

The Troubadours slip to 8-16 for the year with a 1-7 league record. The Wildcats improve to 13-6 overall and evened their SFL ledger to 5-5.

Wenceslao also tallied half of her team's eight steals, with three coming in the opening quarter. Sophomore Kendal Douglas also contributed at set, drawing the exclusions on all four of St. Francis' 6-on-5 opportunities. However, SF shot 0-for-5 in that opening frame while Whitney netted six. That margin swelled to 11-1 at the halftime break and 17-2 through three stanzas.

The varsity game followed a closer 12-8 win for Whitney over the Troubie junior varsity. Sophomore Molly Suggs netted a team-leading four goals. She and Isabella Leyva each had two scores in the second quarter as the teams went to the halftime break in a 6-6 deadlock. Then SF came up empty in the third while the Wildcats found the back of the net three times in each of the third and fourth quarters.

The jayvees' eight goals marks their most in an SFL game this season.

St. Francis JV returns to action in tournament play at the Rio JV Season Closer on Friday and Saturday. This tournament, as the name suggests, was originally slated for October 24-25 but moved up seven days to the penultimate weekend. Both Troubie squads reunite on the road at Del Oro on Monday. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. (varsity) and 7 p.m. (JV).
