SF wraps action at 47th Western States

MODESTO, Calif. – Senior Frannie Wells scored a goal and assisted three others in Saturday's tournament finale against Ponderosa, as St. Francis wrapped action with two Day 2 losses at Enochs High during the 47th Western States girls' water polo tournament. The Troubadours lost to Morro Bay, 9-2, then followed with a 15-4 setback against Pondo.

SF moves to 8-15 for the season.

Sophomore Emma Dietrich put the Troubies on the board in the second quarter of the morning loss to the Pirates, with senior Rose Haag tacking on a goal in the fourth. Goalkeeper Sasha Michon enjoyed her best game of the weekend, tallying 12 saves with three steals.

In the rematch against the Bruins, Gia Navarrete, Audrey Ellis, Wells and Dietrich each netted goals with center Kendal Douglas tallying two steals. However, St. Francis shot just 2-for-15 in the first half to slip into a 10-2 hole at the break. Wells scored her lone goal and assisted Dietrich in the third, but the Troubies could not close the gap in the second half.

Saturday marked the second time in a three-week span that SF has faced Pondo, with the Troubies coming away with a 12-11 win at Granite Bay's Grizzy Classic on September 27.

St. Francis finished 2-2 at the Western States tourney, which features 33 varsity and 13 junior varsity teams competing at six total schools in the San Joaquin Valley. The Troubies return to action on Monday as part of a Sierra Foothill League quadrupleheader with Jesuit against Granite Bay. Game times for SF are 6 p.m. (varsity) and 7 p.m. (JV).
