Troubies sweep Day 1 at Western States tourney

MODESTO, Calif. – Senior Frannie Wells tied her career high of five goals in a 14-5 win over Los Banos, then sophomore Emma Dietrich netted two goals to spark a second-half comeback in a 6-4 victory against Buhach Colony, as St. Francis swept its Friday schedule at the 47th-annual Western States girls' prep water polo tournament at Enochs High.

The Troubadours improve to 8-13 for the season.

Wells' output against the Tigers matches the five goals she posted in last year's Sac-Joaquin Section playoff win over Golden Valley. She completed a hat trick in the second quarter alone, then had one in each of the third and fourth as St. Francis broke away from a 6-3 halftime edge to the nine-goal winning margin.

Sara Ellis added two goals with two assists and two steals against LBHS, with Dietrich, Gia Navarrete and Savannah Hamilton each contributing three assists. Navarrete also had a team-leading three steals, matching junior Maya Wenceslao.

Then in Friday's finale with the Thunder, Hamilton scored her team's lone first-half goal as the Troubies trailed, 2-1, at the halftime break. Then Dietrich scored two with Rose Haag chipping in a third during the third frame, tying the game at 4-4. Wenceslao and Navarrete each found the back of the net in the fourth to put SF on top. Sophomore goalkeeper Sasha Michon tallied three of her six total saves in the final quarter, while Dietrich had an assist and a drawn exclusion in that same stretch.

Wenceslao, Navarrete and Ellis tallied two steals apiece to boost the Troubie defense against Buhach.

The tournament features 33 varsity teams in three divisions spread across four host schools: Johansen, Central Valley, Downey and Enochs. Additionally, 13 JV teams vie in separate competition at Turlock and Beyer, although SF did not send its jayvees to the event. Merced and Del Oro won their respective pools on Friday, and will square off in the Platinum bracket for the overall tourney title on Day 2.

St. Francis concludes action at the Western States tourney on Saturday with games against fellow Silver bracket top seeds Morro Bay (11 a.m.) and Ponderosa (2 p.m.). Both take place at Enochs.
