Three Troubies win individual titles; SF finishes second at Delta League champs

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Seniors Cate Joaquin, Tatiana Cornejo and Grace Heisinger each won individual event titles, leading St. Francis to a second-place total of 143 team points at the Delta League track & field championship finals, held at Sheldon-Pleasant Grove Community Stadium Saturday.

Davis won the varsity team race, just seven points ahead of the Troubadours with 150 points. Pleasant Grove placed third at 116, Elk Grove was fourth with 85, while Franklin (52), Cosumnes Oaks (44) and Sheldon (22) filled the bottom three places. On the JV side, Davis ran away with the league title at 173 points, while St. Francis placed fourth with 68.

The top eight finishers in each varsity event, including relays, advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championships meet, held Tuesday and Thursday at Oak Ridge High.

The Troubies piled up a high percentage of their team points in the 1,600 and 800-meter races. Joaquin won the 1,600 with a time of four minutes, 52.35, with five of her teammates placing among the top eight: Cornejo in second (5:04.12), Grace Dunham in third (5:12.69), Daphne Witherell in fifth (5:25.32), Ryann Strawn in seventh (5:33.97) and Kelsey Sutch in eighth (5:34.69). That accounts for 31 team points.

St. Francis advanced four in the 800, with Cornejo leading the way at 2:18.23 and Kayla Towne right behind in second (2:22.16). Pamela Vargas (2:33.79) and Sutch (2:35.03) snared the seventh and eighth places, ensuring berths in the section meet.

Heisinger dominated the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.96, better than two seconds faster than runner-up Katie Knowles of Pleasant Grove (49.40). That win represented just part of a busy day for the Fair Oaks native: she also finished third in the 100 hurdles with a 17.56, anchored the 4x100 relay to a fourth-place 49.89, then anchored the 4x400 to a second-place 4:08.03 to close the meet. Kyah Pickett, Kenna DeLemos and Caitlin Hafenstein opened the short relay, while Towne, Peyton Carson and Hafenstein ran the long relay with Heisinger.

DeLemos also had a third-place performance in the long jump with a season-best 17-2.25 leap.

St. Francis' top frosh-soph finishers came from the throws, with Mackenzie Santos (72-7) and Elise Blomquist (69-10.5) placing second and third, respectively.

Saturday's meet was the continuation of the Delta League trials section, run one week earlier. Many of the event finals, including the Troubies-led 3,200 and pole vault, ran on April 30.

The Sac-Joaquin Section meet begins at 2 p.m. with the girls' pole vault. The first running event is the 4x100 relay at 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the GoFan website and app at https://gofan.co/app/events/612422?schoolId=CIFSJS.
