DAVIS, Calif. – Senior Tatiana Cornejo dominated the field in the girls' 800-meter run while Elise Blomquist, Caitlin Hafenstein and Pamela Vargas each won frosh-soph events, highlighting St. Francis action at the first Delta League center meet, hosted by Davis High at Dewey Halden Field Wednesday night.

Cornejo finished the 800 with a time of two minutes, 18.32 seconds, more than seven seconds faster than runner-up Lilly Escorcia of Elk Grove. Sophomores Kayla Towne (2:25.78) and Grace Dunham (2:30.35) finished third and fourth, respectively, in that event. Cornejo already ranks second in the Sac-Joaquin Section with her 2:16.36, set a week ago at the Bella Vista Bronco Distance Carnival.

Hafenstein claimed the frosh-soph 100-meter dash at 13.19. She actually won the second heat of the meet, while teammate Jada Dwyre won the first (13.28). The two Troubadours finished 1-2 in the field. Meanwhile, in the throwers' corner of the stadium, sophomore Elise Blomquist pushed the shot 27 feet, 11 inches to win that frosh-soph event. Pamela Vargas ran an 800 in 2:36.13, beating Pleasant Grove's Kylie Monson by 0.61 in her win.

Other highlights belonged to senior Grace Heisinger, who finished second in the 400 at 1:00.95, only four hundredths behind winner Maya Yikilmaz of Davis. That beat her previous personal record of 1:01.98 from May of 2021, and moved her into 20th in the section leaderboard. Heisinger is perhaps better known for her 300 hurdles, in which she leads the Delta League and ranks sixth in the CIF-SJS.

Junior Maddie Pelfrey placed second in the pole vault with an 11-6 leap, behind only Pleasant Grove's Abigail Wagner and her PR of 12-0. Pelfrey currently ranks third in the SJS, behind only Wagner and Oak Ridge's Ali Sahaida (12-9).

St. Francis also repped well in the varsity 1,600, as Grace Dunham (5:15.87) and Daphne Witherell (5:22.95) placed second and third in the race. Dunhgam trimmed more than seven seconds off her previous best of 5:23.19, moving to No. 20 in the Sac-Joaquin rankings. Likewise, Witherell's time represents an improvement of more than nine seconds from her season debut at Bella Vista last weekend.

The Troubies return to action in a pair of specialty meets this weekend. The throwers and pole vaulters will compete in the Granite Bay Field Festival on Friday, while the sprinters and hurdlers head to Bella Vista for the Bronco Speed Festival on Saturday.
