CARMICHAEL, Calif. - Junior Lauren Riley won both the shot put and discus throw to highlight St. Francis action in the annual "Holy Spikes" track meet with area rival Christian Brothers Tuesday afternoon at Jesuit Stadium. The Troubadours outdueled the visiting Falcons, 80-43, in the final team scoring.
The meet features the three largest Catholic schools in the Sacramento area: St. Francis, Jesuit and CB.
Riley hit personal records in both of her victories, firing an 88-foot, 11-inch mark in the discus, then following with a 29-3.5 push in the shot. She surpassed previous bests of 27-5 and 83-3, set just three days earlier at Sheldon's Husky Invitational.
Senior Tatiana Cornejo led a first-through-eighth St. Francis sweep in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line in 2:18.23 — a half second better than her previous PR of 2:18.75 at last year's Dublin Distance Fiesta. Cornejo also led off the Troubies' winning 4x400 relay to close the meet. Kayla Towne, who finished second in the 800 (2:23.01), anchored that relay, with Sarah Charles and Grace Heisinger handling the second and third leg, respectively.
Senior Grace Heisinger obliterated her previous PR with a 46.49 to win the 300-meter hurdles. Charles won the 400 meters at 1:03.02, a 0.70 improvement from her former best quarter in last year's dual with Cosumnes Oaks. Junior Grace Dunham led a 1-2-3 Troubie sweep in the 1,600 with her 5:23.19 winning time, with Ryann Strawn (5:38.53) and Paige Quigley (5:40.53) completing the trifecta.
The Troubie distance and pole vault athletes will compete at Bella Vista's Bronco Roundup on Friday, while the rest of the team returns to action in the first of two Delta League center meets on March 30. These meets are hosted by Davis (Mar. 30) and Jesuit (Apr. 20).
UPDATE: Late results arrived Wednesday morning for the field events. Senior Kenna DeLemos ran away with the long jump with a PR of 16-10.25, junior Cristina Callaghan led a foursome of SFHS entrants in the high jump at 4-6, while junior Maddie Pelfrey continued her chase of the St. Francis school record with a win in the pole vault. Pelfrey cleared 11-6 to lead an all-Troubie field in the event, exactly four feet higher than her next competitor. She ranks second in school history with the 11-10 set in Davis 10 days earlier, and remains just two inches away from matching Meghan Ladd's benchmark of 12-0.
