DUBLIN & ELK GROVE, Calif. - Seniors Tatiana Cornejo and Cate Joaquin each broke the St. Francis school 1,600-meter run record, placing fourth and fifth in that event at the Dublin Distance Fiesta at Dublin High.
Meanwhile at Sheldon High School, pole vaulter Maddie Pelfrey and hurdler Magdalena Becerril each won their respective events at the Husky Invitational, highlighting the first full weekend of St. Francis track & field action for the 2022 season.
Cornejo, a Cal Poly-bound runner and last fall's Delta League cross country champion, crossed in four minutes, 53.27 seconds. Joaquin, who signed a National Letter of Intent with Georgetown in November, finished a mere 0.27 seconds behind her teammate in fifth place at 4:53.54. Both marks surpass the old standard of 4:54.79, set by Joaquin at the 2020 SF Time Trials. The two former all-state harriers are now just two of five runners in school history to crack the five-minute mark in the 1,600.
Cornejo and Joaquin led a delegation of St. Francis runners in an event that featured more than 500 runners across 23 heats. The top three finishers in each hit won commemorative T-shirts, while the heat victor also took home a "Winner" bag. Lydia Jauregui (Heat 1) and Amelia Bell (Heat 3) led off the day with such prizes.
Back in the Sacramento area, Pelfrey won the varsity pole vault with a leap of 11 feet, 0 inches, winning the tiebreaker against Pleasant Grove's Abigail Wagner. Impressively, Pelfrey prevailed in the pole vault while competing concurrently in the high jump, which took place on the opposite end of the apron.
Earlier in the day, Becerril won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.53 despite a slight headwind of 0.6 meters per second.
Among other Troubadour varsity highlight, Donna Valizadeh became the 11th pole vaulter in school history to clear 10 feet, finishing third in the varsity pole vault behind Pelfrey and Wagner. Senior Grace Heisinger matched that third place in the 300 hurdles with a 48.55, missing the St. Francis top-10 list by less than three tenths of a second.
St. Francis returns to action in just three days, hosting Christian Brothers for the annual Holy Spikes meet on Tuesday. The meet begins at 3:30 p.m. at Jesuit High School.
